4 Generations of Eye Care - Since 1909
Amazing Changes Have Occurred In Optometry Over the Past 30 Years!
Since I began working with my father in the early 1970's optometry has changed dramatically. It would not be an exaggeration to say that there is more difference in our ability today to detect eye diseases and to treat them than the difference between an abacus and a modern high speed computer. We did have a fairly complete understanding of myopia and hyperopia and presbyopia and astigmatism - all focus problems of the eyes. But the ability to detect eye disease and treat it has advanced tremendously. Even a graduate from optometry school of 10 or more years ago is out of date and behind the times in the latest techniques in diagnosing and treating vision and eye problems, but fortunately we are able and required to take continuing education courses in order to renew our licenses to practice and more importantly to be able to give the best vision and eye care possible to our patients who depend upon us to safeguard their precious vision and to prevent blindness.
My great-grandfather wrote a book published in 1905 called "The Littlefield System of Eye and Nerve Measurements". He would be astounded to see the changes in optometry and the eyecare field. He wouldn't even know what most of the instruments are used for! He would be amazed at the advances in diagnosing and treating glaucoma, macular degeneration and cataracts - diseases which can cause blindness. He would also be impressed with our much more complete understanding of eye conditions such as lazy eye which can be more successfully treated now than before, even people who have been told fairly recently that "nothing can be done." And what do you suppose he would think of the designer eyeglass frames that we have today? Remember that back 100 years ago that there were basically two styles of frame - gold rimmed or rimless eyeglasses.
One of our most recent equipment acquisitions is called a Fourier Domain Optical Coherence Topographer. I know you don't want to know what that means or how it works. What is important to you is that it allows us to see the macula and the optic nerve of the eye in such detail that we can see defects as small as 5 microns. (That is about one twentieth of the thickness of a piece of paper). We can detect diseases such as macular degeneration and glaucoma much earlier than ever before and more importantly do something about it before it robs you of your precious sight. It does no good to diagnose an eye disease such as macular degeneration or glaucoma unless by so doing you can prevent it from advancing to such a state as to cause blindness or severe vision disability. We are able to recommend treatments such as eye nutrients (lutein, zeaxanthin, omega 3 oils etc.) or prescription medications that can help control glaucoma.
Maybe you are young and not worried about eye diseases that "old" people get. (You should be, so that you can prevent them from becoming a problem as you get older.) But there are many advances that are available for you too!
